Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week's topic is:

Top Ten "Older" Books I Don't Want People To Forget About

Right now, The Hunger Games is still big since the movies are still in production, so it's not on my list, but obviously, it's on my list, ok? : )

    1.        The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

      This is the second time this week I've been able to recommend this book!  I         really do love it though, and I hope people are still reading it!

      2.        Blood andChocolate by Annette Curtis Klause

      I loved this book so much!  This is one of the books that got me out of my Twilight      "slump".  And she left the ending sort of open, so I keep crossing my fingers and hoping that someday, she'll write a sequel!

      3.       Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

      If my grandchildren are not reading Harry Potter, I will probably cry.  No, I will definitely cry.  This series needs to become part of the children's literature canon.

     4.       Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer

      I don't care how much people make fun of me for loving Twilight.  Somehow, this book struck a chord with girls and woman around the world that is probably beyond our comprehension.  I can't really put my finger on what I love so much about Twilight, but even 5 years after reading it, there are scenes I recall with perfect clarity and I still get butterflies in my stomach when I read certain parts.  That, my friends, is what we all want in a book.

       5.       Looking for Alaska by John Green

      I don't care how many people try to ban this book, it should be required reading for every high school student.  It paints a realistic picture of teen issues and problems without sugar-coating or pandering. I think the kids I teach would relate to this book a lot more than they relate to Oliver Twist.  (My review)

       6.       Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson

       ::points up::  Ditto
(        (My review)

       7.       The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

       ::points up::  Ditto.
        Plus, this book has the added bonus of dealing with questions of racism and cultural identity while delivering a whopping plate of funny.  This book has it all!  And kids need to be reading it!  (My review)

        8.       Beastly by Alex Flinn

       There's a reason that fairy tales are still with us.  They have something fundamental to say that is important to us as human beings.  The Beauty and the Beast tale is no exception.  This modern retelling is beautifully done and manages to convey the moral of the fairy tale in a way that maintains the purpose of the story but it doesn't water it down to a kid version.  Although I will admit that I missed the dancing teacups.

     9.       Darkest Power series by Kelley Armstrong

      Personally, I think Kelley Armstrong is a powerhouse when it comes to writing believable paranormal stories.  I feel that she is already overlooked to a certain extent, but her stories have more staying power than a lot of others. I still find myself thinking about these characters from time to time and wondering how they are.  That is because she created characters that came to life for me.  I hope that people are still reading Kelley Armstrong for years.

      10.   The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice

       Anne Rice is the original vampire queen, and no one writes the undead like she does!  Years after reading these books, I still love Lestat and let's face it.  Louis was the original tortured emo vamp, and all others are mere copies!

So who is on your list?  Any of them the same as mine?  Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

  1. We don't have any of the same titles, but your list is great. I was recently thinking I should reread The Vampire Chornicles. It's been AGES! I need to read Blood and Chocolate some day. Here is my list http://wp.me/pzUn5-1ei

  2. Harry Potter and Twilight were both on my list too. I completely agree where Twilight is concerned.

    Check out my TTT.
