Monday Recommend A......

Recommend A...... is sponsored by Chick Loves Lit .  Every Monday, I just recommend one book that meets the weekly criteria!  Hooray!

This week's prompt is.......

RECOMMEND A BOOK THAT SOMEONE ELSE RECOMMENDED TO YOU

This one is actually a little hard for me because I'm the one who is always recommending a million books to everyone.  Now, I read Twilight and The Hunger Games based on recommendations, but everyone knows about those.  I'm going to share one YA and one adult read that I loved and they were recommended to me.

Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough

My very first semester of graduate school, we had to do a project on controversial issues in books, the types of things that get books challenged and banned.  One of the groups had witchcraft as their topic.  Well, the obvious book series is Harry Potter, but they had some other lesser known books on their list, and this was one of those books.  Laurie ::waves at Laurie::, one of the students in the group, had read this book and told me that it was really good.  So I picked it up when I had the chance, and she was right!  It was great!  And I don't think enough people know about it, which is sad.  You can find my review here.

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

I didn't deliberately choose 2 witch books, it just sort of happened!  This is a book that the former librarian at my high school had read and she harassed me for over a year to read it.  At one point, Tara, the drama teacher ::waves at Tara:: also joined in the harassment!  I knew that I would like it, I just never seemed to have time to read it.  Then I got a chance to get the second book as an ARC, so I jumped on that.  When I read this one, I was so, so glad that I had the second one sitting on my computer and I didn't have to wait for it!  This series is phenomenal.  You can find my review here.

So, what books would you recommend to me?  I'm always on the lookout for good books!  I will probably die with a stack of unread books in my room!

  1. I can recommend the Soul Screamers book by Rachel Vincent! I checked your reviews and you like mostly those books I liked as well, so I'm sure you're gonna like this one!

  2. I LOVE witch books and I can't believe I haven't read these two! They both sound awesome!
I write YA urban fantasy and my first trilogy (The Raven Saga) also contains witches... they're such fun to write about!

  3. I also quite enjoy witchy themed books. Once a Witch was pretty good and I've also read the sequel, Always a Witch. I'd recommend Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles if you like YA contemporary (and it seems that you do). :)

  4. I loved Once a Witch and Always a Witch. They were both great reads with some awesome time travel going on. I just hate that, in the end, she loses... you know. No spoilers in the comments. I usually don't read a lot of adult fiction, but a friend of mine who doesn't usually read it either loved A Discovery of Witches. I might have to try that out finally. She will be a happy camper! I would recommend The Dragon Diaries by Deborah Cooke. I loved all 3 of those books so much. You should definitely check them out. Also, Shattered Dreams by Ellie James. Just finished it up last night and really enjoyed it.
