Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.
When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.
Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.
Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: Jem, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa.
As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all. I don't even know where to begin my review of this book. I would have to say that this book ranks right up there with "Mockingjay" as far as books that I've loved this year.
Now, you have to understand that I loved Cassie's Mortal Instrument series. Really loved it. I think I almost fell in love with Jace myself. I love the non-stop action and the world of the Shadowhunters and the way she could make all of it happen plausibly in modern New York City. I didn't think she could top it. Honestly, I was a little worried when I picked this book up.
I should not have been! This book was also non-stop action. Even though it was set in Victorian England, nothing seemed out of place. The characters were believable for the time and everything seemed to blend together magnificently. Once again, she has created larger than life characters, both hero and villain. The nice thing is that her books are never predictable! There was a huge twist near the end that I never saw coming, yet, when it happened, I saw how it had all been there right under my nose the whole time!
It was nice to see names that I recognized from the Mortal Instruments series. It helped to create a real sense of history for the Shadowhunters and made them seem that much more real. Also, I enjoyed being able to see a Victorian Magnus Bane. And without glitter!
Tessa is a beautiful character. I adored her. She is strong, but not so strong that she is unbelievable for the time period. Of course, Will and Jem were both wonderful and I found myself in much of a conundrum about who I liked best. These two are more evenly matched than Simon and Jace, in my opinion. Of course, I think I ended up being just a little more Team Will! (Who am I kidding? I went and downloaded Will wallpaper for my laptop!)
Of course, she then did what Cassie does best. She left the book with a whopper of a cliff hanger! I am chomping at the bit to get the next one!
This is a book that I only put down because I absolutely had to. If it had been summer, I really would have plopped my kids on the sofa to watch too many hours of TV so that I could read it. Go get this book today if you don't already have it.
Grade: A+ summa cum laude
